Lyrics:
“I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all its sad good-byes
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh
Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend (should've known better, yeah)
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh
Never without your love
Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now, who's gonna dance with me?
Please stay
And I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh
now that you're gone
(Now that you're gone) was what I did so wrong, so wrong
That you had to leave me alone?”

Of course, I had to pick one of the most classic '80s songs ever. George Michael's Careless Whisper is a lament of his former infidelity. After doing some research it seems that the song was created by George Michael after being inspired by a crush that he had on a girl named Jane when he was about 12 years old and he would see at the ice rink in Queensway London while chaperoning his sister. The thing is he already had a girlfriend named Helen but he was so interested in Jane that he left  Helen to pursue her. His whole idea for Careless Whisper was to make it a song about the first girl finding out about the second. Of course the whole situation is really complicated and the song is only just a tribute to the complexities of a former lover. Even just the first verse of the song is filled with symbolism of his former endeavor:

"I feel so unsure
As I take your hand
And lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies
Something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all its sad goodbyes”

After that beautiful sax line swoops in and grabs our attention, Michael sings from the perspective of his nervous teenage self, leading one of his several girlfriends to the dance floor. The lines have an ominous air about them, with the music dying and a look in her eyes that signals the end is near, just like in the movies. Another line with great symbolism is the bridge to the song:

“Tonight, the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it’s better this way
We’d hurt each other with the things we want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who’s gonna dance with me?
Please stay”

Michael feels himself almost being assaulted by the music, suggesting that it is louder than usual. This is likely a symptom of his anxiety, as he then expresses wishing things were different, and begins to bargain for another chance. Following the bridge is the chorus yet again followed by one final appearance from that glorious alto sax before the song finally begins to fade out.
In my opinion, this has to be one of the most beautiful songs about love ever created. Just the saxophone at the start of the song is the most notorious thing about it. The lyrics to the song are so full of symbolism and meaning relating to his former love affair and the emotion that is so deeply embedded in the singing reflects the true nature and depth of this story. Also it's impossible to say that this song isn't catchy as all hell. This song will forever be timeless, forever holding a place in everyone's heart. It's a bittersweet classic and tells the age old tale of the struggles and desperation of love.
